Ductless Versus Central AC: All You Need to Know

Here in Arkansas, air conditioning is an important part of everyday life, especially in the summer. When buying or building a home, the correct comfort system should be considered, whether you're trying to install or replace the current unit. The main question is which system will work best with your home, ductless or central AC? There are a few ways to determine your perfect HVAC unit.

The Size of The House

One of the most important factors when choosing between a central or ductless system is the size of the area you want to cool or heat. A ductless air conditioner is excellent for cooling only a limited area. However, central ac will serve you better than individual cooling units if you have a large home.

Ductwork Installed

It is no surprise that ductwork is expensive. Still, if you already have ducts installed, it is more efficient to choose a central cooling system. If ductwork isn't present in your home, then the independent unit could be more practical. Installing ducts can be tedious in an already constructed house, but if you need several independent systems to cool your home, you'll save money in the long run by installing a central unit.

Aesthetic Effect

Independent or ductless air conditioners have two units. One is placed outside and one inside. The inside unit can take up more space since it’s typically installed on a wall. However, if you choose central AC, the vents can easily merge into the ceilings.

The Noise Element

The ductless air conditioner is quieter than the central one. The difference isn’t so stark, but if you’re trying to keep things quiet for a newborn or someone who is easily woken up by noise, then a ductless system could be a good option.

Your Budget

Before starting any new project, it is essential to set your budget. A single ductless unit may cost less, but if you are planning to install several, then maybe, a central cooling system might be more cost-effective. Energy.gov states that “[t]he primary disadvantage of mini-splits is their cost. Such systems cost about $2,000 to $3,000 per ton (12,000 Btu per hour) of cooling capacity. This is about 30% more than central systems, not including ductwork, and may cost twice as much as window units of similar capacity.”

Type Of Architecture

The architecture of the building also impacts your heating and cooling needs. For example, if you live in an old home with thick walls, ductless AC will help you maintain your ideal temperature. Also, it provides a zoning option, through which you can cool one room more than the other. This is not possible with a central system.

Ductless and central air conditioning units both have their advantages and disadvantages. As technology continues to improve, so does the functionality and reliability of each. Making the right decision for your home can be a tedious process, but you are already taking the necessary steps to make an educated decision!
