Signs That It’s Time to Replace Your Air Conditioner and Furnace
February 05, 2020
Is it time to replace your HVAC system?
For some things in your home, it’s easy to tell when they should be replaced. For instance, after the third time your car won’t start, you might look into buying a new battery. With your air conditioner and furnace however, it’s not always that easy to tell when, or if, they need to be replaced. Sometimes your furnace just needs a tune up or your air conditioner needs a replacement part. There are some signs that may indicate whether or not it is time to consider replacing your heating and air conditioning system.
Any sudden changes in air flow, moisture in the wrong places, higher than expected energy bills, significant repairs, or just plain old time, can be a sign. If you notice any of these issues, it’s time to call Mohr Air Conditioning to perform a thorough evaluation of your HVAC system and give you a complete range of options.
Air Flow & Temperature
You depend on your HVAC system to provide steady comfort in your home. Whether it’s the middle of summer or the dead of winter, if you notice that either your AC, or furnace, is not properly maintaining your desired temperature, or it is constantly running when it’s not supposed to, it might mean that there is something going wrong with your system. Air from your system should be consistently cool in summer or warm in winter to keep your home at your desired temperature. If your home isn’t being cooled or heated properly, it likely means that your system is no longer running properly.
Moisture
Air Conditioners make water. It's how they help control the humidity in your home. Moisture leaking out of your air conditioning unit, in the wrong place, may mean that one of the components is damaged or the drain line may be stopped up. It might be a failing drain pan or a clogged condensation pump, but it should be inspected by a professional. Regular tune-ups and maintenance can help prevent these issues from occurring. If your system hasn’t been serviced regularly, these issues can escalate over time and cause serious problems for your unit and potentially your home.
Energy Bill Increases
A sudden and unexplainable increase on your energy bill is never a good feeling. There can be various causes for this that may not be due to your heating and cooling system, including fluctuating rates from your energy provider or a lack of proper insulation in your home. However, this can also be a sign your system isn’t running as efficiently as it should and may be in need of servicing or it could be ready to be replaced by a newer, more efficient system. This is especially true if your energy bill increase occurs suddenly and without explanation. A replacement furnace and air conditioning system can help cut down on energy costs while ensuring your indoor climate is controlled and comfortable.
Significant Repairs
As HVAC systems age, their parts begin to wear. Some parts are simple and inexpensive replacements, and some are not so simple, or inexpensive. When you have to invest significant sums of money into an already aging system it can quickly turn into a cycle of “What is going to break this season?”. You could end up paying a large portion of what it would take to replace your system, without any of the benefit of having a new one, in just a few seasons.
Timing
Sometimes the need for a replacement depends on timing. Most air conditioning units last around 12-15 years and furnaces can last up to 25 years. If you can’t remember how long it’s been since your system was installed, you may be able to determine how old it is by how long have you lived in the home. Has it been replaced since you moved in? How old is the home? Does the system look like it has been there a long time? Some things to consider, whether or not to consider replacing the system are how often it is in need of repairs, or are there issues with inefficiency getting worse. If your AC or furnace need repairs frequently, then it’s likely time to replace your system before the harsh weather in Arkansas, winter or summer, makes it work even harder.
Regularly scheduled maintenance is a great way to ensure that you get the most out of your air conditioning and heating unit(s). If your HVAC system doesn’t receive the maintenance it needs over time, there’s a good chance it will either break down prematurely or steadily become less efficient. You could also be missing out on the clean, fresh air that your system is supposed to be supplying if it’s not running efficiently, which can additionally increase your energy bills as your system works harder.
